THE optimism following the opening day victory at Glasshoughton Welfare was quickly dampened as Glapwell were easily beaten by a Thackley side which the Hall Corner outfit did the double over last season. The Glapwell line-up was strengthened with the return of Gary Page and Martin Rowbottom but both surprisingly found themselves starting the match on the bench. Although manager Graham Gladwin’s loyalty to the same eleven which performed so well at Glasshoughton was understandable, his decision proved to be a flawed one as the home defence was constantly overrun by a strong Thackley side whose route one football could not be stopped by the Glapwell back-line. And, in all honesty, Glapwell were fortunate not to be worse than two goals down in the opening quarter-of-an-hour of the match. Thackley had taken the lead on eight minutes when Chris Jeffery fumbled Mark Sugden’s corner and Matt Surtees bundled home from close range. And, although the keeper was at fault for the opening goal, he kept Glapwell in the game during the following five minutes as, time-and-time again, Thackley broke through the host’s fragile back-line. Firstly, on 10, Amjad Iqbal’s cross from the right ended with Chris Wood’s effort deflecting off Nev Silcock and Jeffery saving with his legs. Jeffery denied Wood twice further in the nightmare opening for Glapwell whilst Martyn Bicknell had to make a last-ditch challenge to stop Nick Hey from advancing into the area. The constant stream of attacks was surely going to end in heartbreak for Glapwell and so it proved when, on 15 minutes, Hey fed Wood through and, as the home defence stopped to claim offside, the striker rounded Jeffery and struck home. Glapwell then enjoyed their first good spell of the match, Brendan Yates seeing a header from a Danny Scott cross cleared off the line by Bryan Brooks. And, from the resultant Scott corner, they pulled a goal back, Simon Poxon striking home Freddie Morgan’s flick-on. The spell of pressure, however, was soon over and Jeffery was called upon to deny Iqbal whilst Paul Bulgin headed just wide from a Mark Sugden free-kick. Glapwell were occasionally showing glimpses of some of the excellent passing football displayed during pre-season, their best move coming on 42 minutes when Stuart Wall released Nathan Booth down the right and his cross just evaded John Redfern who was sliding in at the far post. Booth then had two half-chances in the second-half as he looked the more likely Glapwell player to draw the sides level, but then Thackley put the game beyond doubt through Iqbal after Jeffery had made an initial save. The introduction of Rowbottom and Page, meanwhile, brought some steadiness to the side although the latter was required to clear off the line from a Hey header. Booth found himself through on 73 from a Yates flick-on of a Jeffery goal-kick but his shot went wide, whilst Glapwell survived another Thackley attack when the keeper did well to save Simon Hillam’s shot and Poxon bravely blocked Hey’s follow-up. With six minutes remaining, Morgan
closed the gap with a quickly-taken free-kick from 20 yards, but Glapwell
could not find the elusive equaliser and were ultimately punished for their
poor opening-half showing. |
