GLAPWELL moved up to fourth position as they claimed their second victory in their opening three matches at home to Liversedge on Saturday.

The visitors, though, may feel aggrieved at leaving Hall Corner with no reward as they bossed proceedings for the majority of the encounter.

But, the fact that out of their fourteen opportunities, the West Yorkshire side could only bring Glapwell keeper Christian Jeffery into action three times, showed Sedge’s shortcomings in front of goal as they struggle at the bottom of the table.

For home manager Graham Gladwin, meanwhile, the most positive aspect of the match was the battling spirit displayed by his side to maintain their one-goal advantage whilst not playing well and then, after wearing down the visitors, should have increased their leading margin further towards the end of the game.

It was always going to be a tough afternoon for Glapwell who had nine players unavailable, including four strikers, which meant that Steve Dillon made his first start of the season having passed a fitness test following a hamstring injury, partnering Freddie Morgan who was pushed into attack from midfield.

And, in the opening forty minutes, it was Liversedge who enjoyed the greater of the opportunities.

Besides near misses for Asa Hatfield, Gavin Smith and Damien Melvin, Matt Flynn spurned an excellent chance to give the visitors the lead when, on 25, a James Stansfield long-ball saw Jeffery hesitate from coming off his line, allowing Flynn to run in but the striker missed the target as the keeper ran out to narrow his angles.

Then, a quarter-of-an-hour later, Flynn turned provider to deliver a low cross for Paul Smith but Jeffery did excellently to block his effort.

Glapwell, meanwhile, could only enjoy a couple of long-range efforts from Gary Page, the first of which trickled into Paddy Kerr’s arms whilst the other flew just over the bar from 25 yards.

So, it came as a bit of a surprise when Glapwell took the lead on 44 minutes, following an excellent move down the right - the host’s most productive avenue in the opening period - Adie Carter with a neat ball to the byline for Martin Rowbottom who pulled the pass back for Freddie Morgan to tap into the empty net at the far post.

The opening exchanges of the second period went Liversedge’s way as the visitors tried desperately for an equaliser.

Stansfield saw two chances go over the bar for the visitors whilst Danny Cooper struck the side-netting from 20 yards after a poor clearance by Page, symptomatic of Glapwell’s panic defending throughout the afternoon.

And, Sedge must have realised it was not to be their day when, on 68, a Melvin cross from the right saw an unmarked Smith guide a header over Jeffery but his effort rebounded back out off the bar.

That seemed to kill off Liversedge’s challenge and Glapwell finished the game with overwhelming dominance.

Firstly, Kerr denied Morgan his second with an excellent point-blank save whilst Carter was denied his first goal for the club soon after when his effort past the keeper was disallowed due to Morgan being offside.

Danny Welch fired a weak effort at Kerr following a good move down the left, whilst substitute Chris Parr missed the target from two late clear-cut chances, as Glapwell failed to turn their late territorial advantage into anything more tangible.
