A GARY Page brace secured Glapwell their third league victory out of four as they disposed of pre-season title favourites, Goole AFC, at Hall Corner on Saturday to move up into fourth place in the Premier Division.

Six months ago, the sides met at Goole’s Victoria Pleasure Grounds where a 4-1 defeat for the Glapwell outfit saw them reach a lowpoint resulting in manager Graham Gladwin’s temporary resignation whilst the North Yorkshire side’s confidence was becoming increasingly unconquerable.

However, after this latest showing, the roles have completely reversed with Glapwell never before being so optimistic with a strong squad whilst Goole AFC, struggling with player numbers and failing to find any consistency, could see their boss Peter Daniel relieved of his post in the near future.

Glapwell came into the game making only one change from the side which took Dr Martens side, Grantham Town, almost to the edge in the previous week’s FA Cup encounter.

Central defender Simon Poxon was unavailable due to holiday commitments and was replaced by Steve Heighway.

The opening period was a fairly even affair with the hosts enjoying slight territorial possession but neither side could force a difficult save out of either goalkeeper.

But, as the second-half progressed, there was only ever going to be one winner as Glapwell took control of the encounter whilst their visitors struggled to create any clear-cut chances and failed to establish any sort of momentum.

And, Glapwell’s dominance produced something tangible immediately when, 56 seconds after the interval, they broke the deadlock as they took full advantage of a Goole defensive mistake.

Page seized on the loose ball, releasing Nathan Booth down the left who returned the favour for the winger to blast the opener from ten yards with a powerful right-foot effort.

And, twenty minutes later, the points were seemingly fully claimed when Page added his second in bizarre circumstances.

His low free-kick from the left-hand side bounced twice in the area through a sea of players who all failed to make contact and, with keeper Phil Dobson caught out of position, the ball skimmed into the opposite bottom corner of the net.

However, it would not be a typical Glapwell performance if there were not a dramatic twist in the tale and so it proved as, with ten minutes to go, a match seemingly petering out sparked into life once again.

A spat between Glapwell’s Nev Silcock and Goole’s Nick Houghton saw the former given a straight red card for kicking out after Houghton had seemed to elbow him in the face, a foul which saw the visiting midfielder also leaving the field for his second bookable offence.

Then, three minutes later, referee Stuart Smith gave a fortunate lifeline for the Vikings as Heighway was harshly adjudged to have fouled in the penalty area, and Goole skipper Andy Flounders converted the resultant spot-kick.

With a handful of lengthy breaks for treatment of injuries, the game then entered into a long and tense period of stoppage time.

An excellent save by a retreating Neil Etheridge denied Danny Campbell whose looping header from a Flounders cross seemed to have gone over him into the net but the keeper managed to somehow get back and tip over the bar.

And, at the other end, Danny Scott and Heighway missed opportunities, but they proved to be circumstantial as the official blew his whistle to give Glapwell their deserved victory.
