GLAPWELL FC RESULTS - 2001/02 SEASON

GLAPWELL 11 MATLOCK UNITED 2

WITH no midweek League or Cup match schedule, manager Graham Gladwin took the opportunity to organise a friendly with Beauvale Midland Alliance outfit, Matlock United, to give the fringe players in the squad a chance to push their claims for a regular spot.

And, they certainly put an excellent case forward as they completely overwhelmed their opponents and reached double figures for only the second time in their history.

The onslaught began on ten minutes when Brendan Yates, playing in his first game for a month due to suspension, converted from the penalty spot.

And, Glapwell were two goals further ahead less than five minutes later when Nev Silcock’s cross was deflected into his own net by a United defender and then Silcock’s excellent run ended in Yates grabbing his second.

Yates got his hat-trick just prior to the interval and gave Glapwell a four-goal advantage at half-time before his fourth, and the host’s fifth, came following an excellent weaving run in the box on 50 minutes.

Chris Parr capped an excellent performance on the left-wing when he intercepted a cross-field pass on the half-way line and converted following a surging run.

United then pulled one back on 63 before it became the Steve Dillon show, who struck four times in nineteen minutes. Firstly, on 65, the striker converted after Parr had hit the post before, four minutes later a second own goal from a Lee Rhodes cross made it 8-1.

Dillon then headed Freddie Morgan’s cross past the United keeper, then tapped-in for his hat-trick, before striking home the keeper’s fumble from a Parr cross to take the hosts’ tally to eleven. United then added a second following a goalmouth scramble in the 88th minute, but it was Glapwell who emerged deserved winners.

Glapwell: Etheridge, Silcock, Davy, Purdy, Bicknell (Morgan 45), Parr, Rhodes, Scott (Marshall 60), Yates, Booth (Dillon 45), Welch.
Man Of The Match: Chris Parr.
