GLAPWELL’S poor run in the FA Vase continued as they were defeated by Hellenic League side Pegasus Juniors, but the result paled into insignificance as the club ended the match worrying about the health of right-back Martin Rowbottom.

The defender, who has impressed greatly since his move from Shirebrook Town, was involved in a horrific injury-time incident which left him in a distressed state and had to be taken to hospital with suspected groin injuries.

The sight of Rowbottom being stretchered into an ambulance made a dissatisfying afternoon even more unbearable as Glapwell slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat in the competition, this time lamenting their inability to take their chances against their Hereford-based opponents.

The game, however, began positively with Nathan Booth and Steve Dillon bringing visiting goalkeeper Andrew Watkins into action in the first five minutes. But, from nowhere, the composure disappeared completely from the home side and Juniors took advantage of the lapse to score on 12.

A quick break down the middle prised the hosts’ defence open, Mark Davis’ initial effort was saved by Neil Etheridge before Leigh Harris lifted the rebound over the keeper.

After that, Glapwell dominated first-half proceedings with Gary Page instrumental in all the early good work. His 20th-minute free-kick was headed over by Freddie Morgan whilst Steve Dillon’s excellent turn-and-shot from the winger’s cross soon after also missed the target.

Booth had a further good opportunity on 25 after Dillon had put him through but, under pressure, his shot was weak at Watkins.

Yet, for all of Glapwell’s dominance, it was Pegasus who looked the more dangerous when they attacked although that was less of an occurrence.

The home side had the keeper to thank on 35 when a double save from Davis and Harris prevented Juniors from doubling their lead.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Glapwell found themselves back in the game, Morgan heading home his third of the season from a pin-point Booth cross.

The second-half began with Glapwell once again in the ascendancy but Steve Heighway, Dillon and Chris Parr could not put away their respective chances.

Yet, Pegasus’ danger on the break was highlighted once again on the hour when Etheridge was forced to push Davis’ pin-point header onto the bar.

But, from the resultant corner, Pegasus regained the lead when Morgan deflected Harris’ header into the roof of his own net.

As the game entered the final ten minutes, Glapwell pushed forward but were thwarted continually by stalwart Pegasus defending, goal-line clearances and an excellent pin-point save by Watkins from Morgan.

But, as the game entered injury-time, the enjoyable afternoon of football was soured when Rowbottom and Pegasus full-back Jonathan Hill both slid in for a loose ball.

Whether intended or not, it was an awful challenge from Hill which saw a strong two-footed effort hit Rowbottom directly in the groin, and from thereon, the instant anger expressed by the home players as Hill received only a yellow card from referee Eddie Mitchell turned into a subdued hush as the right-back was tended to.

Rowbottom left hospital late Saturday evening but was required to return on Monday where more tests were to be made to determine the extent of the damage.
