GLAPWELL’S matches against bogey-side Brodsworth Welfare are always eventful affairs and Saturday’s game at the Welfare Ground continued the trend in unpredictable fashion. With 20 minutes gone, the Hall Corner side were cruising with a two-goal cushion, playing some of their best football of the season and seemingly striding to three points. But then, two giveaway goals and Glapwell reduced to ten men with goalkeeper Neil Etheridge shown the red card, the tide of the match turned and, although the visitors were the better side in the second half, their numerical disadvantage told as Welfare grabbed the points with ten minutes remaining. The unbelievable start was made even more of a surprise as Glapwell came into the game with the number of unavailable players reaching double figures, six of which were defenders, with two last-minute casualties throwing manager Graham Gladwin’s plans into disarray. This meant that Freddie Morgan, usually the playmaker in midfield, was drafted to right-back whilst John Purdy was called on for his first game of the season at centre-back despite still not being fully fit following a back injury. And yet, they began the game in breathtaking fashion, taking the lead on eight minutes when Nathan Booth fed Adie Carter through, the right-winger rounding keeper Tim Whitehouse before stroking home his first goal for the club. Booth and then Morgan found themselves denied by Whitehouse soon after, the latter’s effort rebounding back out from goal via the underside of the crossbar. And, Glapwell’s early dominance brought a second when an excellent move down the left was finished with a Booth header from Danny Scott’s pin-point cross. But, after that Glapwell committed defensive suicide with two inexcusable lapses. The first came on 29 minutes when Gary Page attempted a pass-back from the halfway line. Already well underhit, the long grass held it up even more and Shane Fox sprang the defensive line to round Etheridge and convert into the empty net. And, when almost an identical passage of events occurred eleven minutes later, Glapwell found themselves even more greatly punished. This time it was Purdy who misjudged his backpass from midfield, Fox pounced and ,as he tried to pass Etheridge, he fell to the ground under the keeper’s challenge and, once referee Gary Hobson had blown his whistle, he had no option but to send Glapwell’s custodian off. Therefore, for the second time in three games, an outfield Glapwell player had to go in goal, this time it was Morgan who could do nothing to stop Paul Humphries subsequent spot-kick. Glapwell finished the half in disarray and the war of words between players as they left the pitch showed their lack of composure. But, credit to the visitors, they found themselves back on track after the interval but, despite chances from Booth, Steve Dillon and Simon Poxon, they could not edge in front. The fact that it took Brodsworth until the 76th-minute to have a shot at goal, Mark Vickerage striking straight at Morgan, was testament to Glapwell’s dominance. But, Glapwell’s extra required work-rate saw them fade late on and Kevin Kelly struck home the winner following a left-hand corner. And, with Glapwell preparing to face a trip to another bogey side on Wednesday against promoted outfit, Borrowash Victoria, the manner of this defeat will not be great preparation for that difficult tie. |
