A DEFLECTED injury-time winner for promoted side Borrowash Victoria broke Glapwell hearts at the Moorways Stadium, just when it had seemed that the visitors had done enough to secure a deserved point.

The clashes between the two Derbyshire sides have always been tight encounters with the winning side just claiming their victory by the narrowest margin, and so it proved here again.

Glapwell came into the game with a stronger squad than the one which played at Brodsworth Welfare four days earlier. The return of full-backs Martin Rowbottom and Martyn Bicknell boosted the side, but Chris Taylor’s prolonged ankle problem meant that he could not return. And, midfielder John Redfern was unwell resulting in striker Brendan Yates making his first appearance in over a month in an unusual role.

But, the aftermath of the confidence-knocking defeat at the weekend was all too evident as Borrowash’s rapid counter-attacking movement tore the visiting defence apart for the opening half-hour.

On 8 minutes, Vics were denied by excellent last-ditch defending from keeper Neil Etheridge and captain Simon Poxon from consecutive efforts by Chris Henson.

There were infrequent signs, though, of Glapwell gaining their composure. On 18, a good run down the right from Adie Carter ended in a low cross from which Steve Dillon turned and shot but his effort was off-target.

But, it was the Vics who looked the more threatening, and Glapwell were fortunate on 21 minutes when the ball nestled in the back of their net only for the hosts to be punished harshly for offside.

And, soon after, Rowbottom needed to use all his pace and skill to get back and block Henson after the Vics had broken quickly.

So, when Glapwell took the lead on 30 minutes, it was somewhat against the run of play, Danny Scott’s cross headed towards goal by Nathan Booth and, although Lowe parried his effort, the striker was on hand to guide home the rebound for his fourth of the season.

This galvanised Glapwell into action, with Booth and Carter going close prior to the interval. And, Glapwell remained in the ascendancy at the start of the second-half, with the Vics needing to clear off-the-line from a corner whilst Dillon’s slide-in to connect with a Carter cross went straight into Lowe’s arms.

But, as the game passed the hour mark, there were glimpses that the Vics were beginning to build momentum, Wayne Thornhill denied by another good save from Etheridge whilst the keeper was called into action again to save with his legs at point-blank range from Henson following an Aaron Johnson cross.

So, when Vics equalised on 69 minutes, Paul Brookes at the far post from a Thornhill cross after the visiting defence had dallied in their clearance, it came as no surprise.

Etheridge was then under siege and had to make further good stops from Thornhill and Shaun Murphy before the introduction of Malc Brown by Graham Gladwin saw Glapwell go into the final ten minutes in the ascendancy.

Firstly, great play down the right from Brown saw him produce a good cross which Dillon was unfortunate to guide just wide of Lowe’s left-hand post. And, Brown came close to scoring himself soon after, but his effort was cleared off the Borrowash line.

Then, as the game entered injury time, Vics claimed a corner and, from the set-piece, Thornhill’s drive from just outside the area was deflected by a Glapwell defender, wrong-footing Etheridge to give Vics the win that propelled them to the top of the Premier Division.
