GLAPWELL’S defensive shortcomings away from home came back to haunt them once again as two late conceded goals saw hosts Armthorpe Welfare take the points on Saturday. Despite being unable to produce a consistent high level of performance, Graham Gladwin’s side found themselves 2-1 up with ten minutes to goal through well crafted strikes from John Redfern and Steve Dillon. But, twice they then allowed Craig Roden to walk through their collapsing back-line to score one and create his side’s third, as the visitors saw themselves leaving Doncaster for the second time in a fortnight without any reward. And, worryingly for the Hall Corner outfit, it was the fourth time in five away games that Glapwell had been ahead in an encounter but ended up on the losing side. Gladwin was forced into making one change from the starting eleven which had been impressive against Denaby United seven days earlier, Malc Brown replacing top scorer Nathan Booth up front for his first start of the season. And, in a deadlocked opening half-hour, Glapwell’s best opportunities came from the left-sided crosses from Danny Scott but Simon Poxon, Freddie Morgan and John Redfern could not convert their headed chances. Meanwhile, the hosts were looking particularly threatening on the counter-attack with ex-Halifax Town centre-forward Simon Johnson causing the visiting back-line problems with his pace. But, keeper Neil Etheridge was not put under too much pressure until Welfare opened the scoring on 44 minutes. Glapwell left-back Martyn Bicknell, still seething following a contretemps with Johnson a minute later, brought Karl Jebson down with a crude challenge on the edge of the penalty area and, from the resulting free-kick, Roden laid the ball square for an unmarked David Jones to strike home from 20 yards. And, the visitors were left hanging on and desperately pleading for the interval as their defence collapsed and Johnson, finding himself twice through on goal, was firstly foiled by Etheridge and then by his own poor finishing. The second-half began in even fashion, with Glapwell enjoying the majority of possession but, without the belief in attack, several good moves ended in disappointment due to lack of numbers in the penalty area, whilst Welfare’s direct play proved the more threatening. Johnson again found himself through twice in the opening ten minutes but once again ended up lamenting his finishing and Etheridge’s tenacious showing. Then, suddenly on 73, there was a glimmer of hope for Glapwell when Brown’s short corner to Scott saw the winger’s put-in bravely headed home by a stooping Redfern to bring the sides level. And when, six minutes later, Dillon put Glapwell ahead with a brilliant piece of individual skill, the victory looked assured. Bicknell’s pass had left Dillon seemingly with nowhere to go, encamped on the left-wing at the halfway line, but the striker skipped past his marker, beat two more and unleashed an unstoppable 25-yarder past Peter Hayes. But then, Glapwell hit self-destruct. Firstly, on 87, Roden picked up the ball on the halfway line and, under no pressure whatsoever, progressed into the penalty area and converted low to Etheridge’s right. Then, in the second minute of injury time, Roden was allowed to advance into the box once again, he laid the ball off to substitute Gavin Warboys who took advantage of a stumbling Steve Heighway to find the same part of the net. |
