GLAPWELL succumbed to their biggest defeat of the season and it could have been a lot worse as they were overwhelmed in every department by a well-organised Sheffield outfit at Hall Corner on Saturday. As well as finding the net four times, the Coach and Horses Ground side also missed two penalties and hit the upright, whilst Glapwell had to play the last ten minutes without goalkeeper Neil Etheridge who was harshly red-carded. The loss now means that Glapwell are thirteenth in the Premier Division and have lost four of their last five league matches, a trend that needs to be reversed soon to avoid a relegation battle. The recent run of poor results had been softened a touch by the fact that Glapwell had not played badly, but no such comfort could be attained from Saturday’s match as they failed to show any sustained passion or commitment against a Sheffield team on a five-match unbeaten streak. The hosts had begun well with Steve Dillon and Malc Brown manufacturing good chances in the opening ten minutes but they could not force visiting keeper Darren Bonnington into action. But, as the match progressed, the Glapwell defence could not cope with the running off-the-ball and incisive passing of the visitors and, within 24 minutes, found themselves two goals behind. Firstly, on 16, the hosts must have felt a little aggrieved after Etheridge had made an excellent stop to deny Richard Davenport but the rebound fell favourably for the striker who converted into the empty net. However, Etheridge must hold his hands up and take the blame for Sheffield’s second as he dallied on a clearance from a Simon Poxon backpass, Davenport capitalised and, in the resulting goalmouth melee, home centre-back Steve Heighway handled on the ground. Craig Owen stepped up to stroke the resultant spot-kick past Etheridge. Glapwell remained second best with Mick Godber, Richard Davenport and Lee Vernon all finding their way through the home defence but could not further their advantage. And, on 55, Godber came the closest when a turn-and-volley from just outside the penalty area hit Etheridge’s right-hand post as the keeper seemed certain it was going wide. But, for a ten minute spell halfway through the second period, there was some hope for the hosts as Sheffield became a rattled outfit, and Glapwell halved the deficit on 73 when Malc Brown guided home at the second attempt after Poxon’s header from an Adie Carter corner had hit the bar. But, any hopes of a revival were quickly shattered as Godber pounced twice in four minutes to convert past Etheridge following more fatal hesitancy in defence by Glapwell and put the result beyond doubt. Yet, that was not the end of the drama when, on 84 minutes, Etheridge was clearly elbowed by Asa Ingall and, although the keeper only pushed the midfielder, referee Mark Jones incredibly saw the incident bad enough to send the home custodian off with no punishment to the original offender. For the second time this season, midfielder John Redfern found himself in between the posts but he was not called into immediate action as Godber lifted the penalty over the bar. And, as the game entered injury time, Sheffield were given a third penalty of the afternoon as Poxon upended Davenport in the box, but Redfern pulled off an excellent save to his left to deny Owen his second goal of the afternoon. |
