TWO first-half strikes for hosts Arnold Town condemned Glapwell to their third consecutive league defeat as the Hall Corner side failed to find the net for the first time this season.

Manager Graham Gladwin made four changes to the starting eleven following the previous week’s 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Sheffield.

Martyn Bicknell and Steve Heighway were relegated to the bench after their disappointing defensive showing whilst Freddie Morgan returned in an attempt to bolster midfield.

And, Eastwood Town goalkeeper Neil West was drafted in on loan with both regular Glapwell custodians, Neil Etheridge and Christian Jeffery, out with suspected long-term injuries.

But, the alterations failed to rekindle the recently lost spark in the side as Glapwell produced a wretched first-half performance.

And, although the team’s showing and commitment improved after the interval, the fact that they did not force Arnold keeper Lee Broster into action at any point during the afternoon was proof of their lack of confidence in the final third of the pitch against their well-organised hosts.

In an opening period which proved painful for the visiting support, the Eagles found themselves two goals up by the half-hour mark and could have been even further ahead before the interval.

They opened the scoring on 14 minutes when a Craig Maddison free-kick on the left somehow bounced untouched through a sea of players near the penalty spot to an unmarked Paul Mitchell who converted at the far post.

And, on 28, with the Glapwell back-line almost camped on the halfway line, a quick ball down the middle by Mitchell saw Mark Gadsby break through and apply a good finish past West.

Gadsby was proving to be Glapwell’s biggest problem, with him also finding the back of the net on two further occasions but had his efforts disallowed due to a debatable offside decision and an earlier foul.

And, the Arnold striker also missed two close-range headers from Adrian Thorpe crosses from the right.

Glapwell, meanwhile, had enjoyed spells in Arnold’s half but only had wild, well off-target long-range shots from Adie Carter and Malc Brown to show for it.

The second-half began with Glapwell showing a lot more drive, with opportunities for Gary Page and Nathan Booth in the opening ten minutes but neither took their chances confidently.

But, as Gladwin altered his formation to try and get back into the encounter, it was Arnold who finished the stronger and the visitors had West to thank for stopping the margin of defeat from growing.

The keeper had to make two excellent stops to deny Gadsby and produced another equally impressive block to thwart Wayne Manners in injury-time.

Also for the hosts, Nathan Fletcher hit the bar whilst Gadsby, Giorgio Vitale and Charlie Bannister were guilty of missing gilt-edged opportunities.

Glapwell showed a glimpse of what they are capable of on 82 minutes when an intricate move down the right involving Martin Rowbottom and Adie Carter ended with the latter’s cross going wide from an overhead kick by Booth.

But, this sort of endeavour from Glapwell was far too sporadic as Arnold Town ran out comfortable and worthy winners.
