IN a match where, following recent poor displays, the performance was perhaps more important than the result, Glapwell produced a far more satisfying showing against a buoyant Brodsworth Welfare side at Hall Corner on Saturday. Manager Graham Gladwin responded to the team’s disappointing 2-0 defeat at Arnold Town a week earlier by making several changes. To bring more bite into the middle third of the pitch, Malc Brown moved into the centre of midfield to replace Freddie Morgan, who needed rest from his persistent hamstring problems, and Brendan Yates replaced Danny Scott on the left-wing. Chris Parr replaced the unavailable Adie Carter on the right flank whilst, with main centre-back Chris Taylor still out with an ankle injury, John Purdy remained in the back four with Steve Heighway on the bench. And, the match began with Glapwell attacking the Welfare goal from the kick-off, but disaster struck when, in the second minute, as the visitors crossed the halfway line for the first time, Glapwell found themselves a goal behind. It was criminal defending once again as the home backline, virtually on the halfway line, allowed Gareth Collinson to run through and divert the ball past Neil West. An early blow like that could have released the demons once again but, all credit to Glapwell, they rose to the challenge and became the dominant force for the remainder of the first half, denied only by poor finishing and excellent saves by visiting custodian, Tim Whitehouse. John Redfern and Steve Dillon failed to convert half-chances whilst Nathan Booth found himself through after 28 minutes but his low, well-struck shot was parried behind by the keeper. Then, on 38 minutes, Whitehouse brought down Booth in the area as the striker rounded him and referee Steve Cook pointed to the spot. However, the unappreciated irony of the instance was that in the September reverse fixture, Glapwell keeper Neil Etheridge had been sent off for an identical incident, whereas this time Whitehouse did not even receive a yellow card. And, with regular penalty-taker Morgan not on the pitch, Brown opted to take the spot kick but his effort was well saved. Poxon was then denied by Whitehouse at close range from a Brown corner whilst Glapwell’s inability to score looked almost certain to be punished, but Martin Rowbottom cleared off the line from an Alan Radford header. The second-half looked set to carry on in the tradition of the first period as Booth was denied in the opening minute by a flying stop from Whitehouse. But, Glapwell were soon deservedly level when an excellent move down the left culminated in Booth crossing for Dillon to convert. Then, on 53, a Gary Page corner was headed back across goal by Poxon for Brown to force home from close range. Welfare, momentarily, looked to be falling apart but suddenly found extra spirit when a piece of individual skill brought them back level just after the hour mark, Paul Haywood’s long-range volley bouncing past West into the net. Glapwell then found themselves under some pressure and had to rely on an acrobatic save from West to tip over Gary Hirst’s well-struck effort and Rowbottom who once again cleared off-the-line this time from Haywood. Dillon then had Glapwell’s last clear-cut chance of the afternoon as the game petered out but his volley was straight at Whitehouse. |
