A MALC Brown strike direct from a corner as the game entered injury-time earned Glapwell a well deserved point as they battled hard against a physical Harrogate Railway side. The evening was always going to be a tough one for the Hall Corner outfit against the Yorkshire team which had come so close to reaching the FA Cup First Round Proper just weeks earlier. And, so the match proved, being an exciting, hard-fought and brutal encounter although the game often threatened to boil over as referee Mark Jones seemingly lost control of proceedings during the second period. Glapwell manager Graham Gladwin, mindful of the side’s recent poor defensive record, altered the team’s formation to a 3-5-2 line-up with Chris Parr and Adie Carter given the opportunity to shine as wing-backs, whilst Malc Brown and Brendan Yates moved into midfield to add bite recently missing in the centre. And, for the vast majority of the encounter, the new system worked well and looked more solid. But, once again, a couple of defensive lapses ruined the remaining night’s good work as the home side allowed Railway back into the game after Steve Dillon had put the hosts ahead. The match began with Railway in the ascendancy and it looked as though Glapwell were going to be over-run, with keeper Neil West called into action to deny Steve Haddon and Liam Gray whilst a Jimmy Gore effort went over the bar. But, as the half progressed, Glapwell began to get into the game, Simon Poxon with an effort across the face of goal on 18 minutes after a Brendan Yates flick-on from a Brown free-kick. Then, on the half-hour mark, Yates took advantage of some sloppy visitors’ defending but his shot was straight at Robert Montgomery. Meanwhile, at the other end, West was called upon to parry Steven Jones’ effort behind and had to clutch on to a Kevin Smith shot. Glapwell came close to opening the lead on 37 when Martin Rowbottom’s high ball through was excellently controlled by Dillon but his shot was well held by Montgomery. But, Dillon went one better four minutes later when a Brown cross was flicked-on by Yates and Dillon was on hand to prod home his fifth of the season and give Glapwell an interval lead. After the break, the match continued at a furious pace, but chances were at a premium. The first opening came for Rail as Ian McLean’s 61st-minute effort from the left-corner of the penalty area was well struck but just wide of West’s left-hand post. But, soon after, Rail were level when they were awarded a cast-iron penalty following a trip in the area by Poxon, McLean’s spot-kick finding its way into the back of the net despite a heavy fingertip touch by West. Then, with twelve minutes remaining, Rail were gifted the lead. A routine long-ball saw John Purdy hesitate in his clearance before guiding a header back towards West that was grossly understrength allowing Smith to capitalise. However, Glapwell refused to surrender the match and continued fighting towards the end but could not create any clear chances until the game entered its final minute and a quick Glapwell attack yielded a corner. From the resultant set-piece, Brown’s put-in,aided by a strong wind, sailed through a sea of players and past Montgomery into the net to grab a deserved point, with the ecstatic celebrations of both players and supporters showing the relief around Hall Corner. |
