GLAPWELL ended their six-match league run without a victory with a remarkable 7-3 win at Garforth Town. The game began with Garforth in the ascendancy putting the Glapwell goal under intense pressure. Their experienced centre-forward John Francis was prominent forcing Glapwell to concede numerous corners and forcing Neil West in the visiting goal to tip over a rising drive. The home pressure continued for the first 25 minutes until Glapwell, in their first serious attack, strung together a flowing move, starting with Brendan Yates running at the Garforth defence and sliding the ball out onto the right for Steve Dillon whose early cross gave the unmarked Nathan Booth an easy header to open the scoring for the Hall Corner side. Instead of sitting back as they normally do, Glapwell gained more confidence from the goal and started to cut through the Garforth defence at will with Yates’ running with the ball at their back-line causing them all sorts of problems. And then, a five-man move involving John Redfern, Yates, Chris Parr and Dillon ended with Booth scoring his second with an easy tap-in. But, the defensive lapses that have been a constant thorn in Glapwell’s side this year reared their head again when a poor kick from West went straight to Francis who quickly transferred the ball to Carl Fox who had made ground on the left wing and he made no mistake with a left-foot shot across the Glapwell keeper. However, Glapwell were not fazed and restored their two-goal cushion on 40, Dillon the scorer with Booth the provider. Francis, though, was determined to have the last word and, after a rather harsh decision on Redfern, the resultant free-kick ended with the ball going out for a corner, from which the Garforth striker scored with a header. But, incredibly, Glapwell immediately regained their advantage when the eager Yates snapped up his first to give the visitors a 4-2 half-time lead. The second period began in almost the exact pattern as the first with Garforth on the attack and Glapwell being pegged back again, although this was more down to the lethargic play of the Hall Corner outfit rather than incisive play by their hosts. However, as the game seemed to be petering out, Garforth were back in the game on 78 minutes with Fox eluding both John Purdy and Parr to put in a tremendous diagonal cross for Francis to score his second with a close-range header. But, once again, Glapwell hit back within a minute when Dillon, who was outstanding all afternoon, was finding acres of room down the left and he scored with a low diagonal shot before, less than sixty seconds later, he completed his hat-trick with a fine rising drive to put his side 6-3 ahead. Glapwell were finding plenty of joy down the left-hand side and it was from this avenue that they found their seventh in injury-time, this time it was wing-back Adie Carter who finished off another incisive move, sliding the ball across and past Stuart Jeffrey. This was the final act in what was an outstanding attacking display by Glapwell, but with good backing from the excellent Redfern in midfield and captain Simon Poxon shepherding the defence. And, with Lee Rhodes, in his first full game having a very promising debut, the afternoon was sheer ecstasy following the club’s recent poor run. |
