GLAPWELL progressed through to the Third Round of the League Cup without breaking sweat as they easily disposed of a poor Maltby Main side.

The Hall Corner outfit did not play anywhere near their potential with them failing to get out of second gear all afternoon.

And yet, for them to have had such an easy day’s work underlined the vast gulf between the middle of the Premier Division and the lower echelons of Division One.

Main were virtually non-existent as an attacking force, with home keeper Neil West only required to make one save and that was an easy catch from a long-range effort by Russ Ward at the beginning of the second-half.

And so, it was just a case of Graham Gladwin’s side doing just enough to progress through in a competition that his team should be looking to doing well in to keep the season interesting.

The pattern of the match emerged early on with Gary Page and Steve Dillon coming close in the opening minutes as Glapwell found an easy outlet down the left-hand side.

And, on 9 minutes, the hosts found themselves ahead when Main’s back-line was split by a long ball over the top and, as Brendan Yates advanced in the area, he was clipped by keeper Lee Manderson, giving referee Alistair Lindsay no option but to point to the spot.

Yates then picked himself up from the challenge and dispatched the resultant spot-kick low to Manderson’s right.

Yates then, twice in a minute, came within a whisker of doubling the advantage but on both occasions he just failed to make contact with a Lee Rhodes low cross and then a Nathan Booth put-in.

And, Steve Dillon found himself through on goal as Main were caught out again with the ball over the top but his attempted lob was plucked out of the air by Manderson.

Main were enjoying a touch more of the possession but they never troubled the Glapwell goal whilst, at the other end, Yates was denied twice by the acrobatic Manderson.

Then, on 32, Rhodes thought he had doubled the host’s advantage when he put the ball into the back of the net following a six-yard line scramble, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

It took 35 minutes for Main to muster their first shot on goal but, in keeping with their display, Gary Sandland’s shot from the edge of the box was wild and it went out for a throw-in.

The second-half began with Glapwell seemingly feeling that the job was done, allowing Main to have their best spell with Ward bringing West into action and John Noble’s 20-yarder just missing the target.

But, the game was all over on 56 when, following a Main attack, West’s clearance fell to Malc Brown - brought on as substitute just minutes earlier to add some bite to midfield - who fed Booth through to convert his seventh goal of the season.

After that, the game descended into a non-event of bookings and substitutions as Glapwell seemed content with their two-goal cushion and Maltby Main were clearly unable to find a way to get past the home defence.

Main did have the ball in the net on 81 minutes following an untidy piece of play but a foul on home defender Martyn Bicknell saw their effort disallowed.

And, as the game entered injury time, Glapwell produced one flicker of life when Booth was through on goal, squaring it to recent signing James Gilling, but the youngster’s shot was well saved by the legs of Manderson.
