A DEFENSIVE blunder two minutes from the end of normal time saw Glapwell leave Sandygate empty-handed despite more-than-matching league leaders, Hallam.

The Hall Corner side went into the match with their best run of the season so far - a four match unbeaten spell - and, for their showing on Saturday, should have extended it further.

But, although they had the superior possession and territory in the encounter, their few defensive mistakes were punished clinically by their hosts.

And, even though the scoreline was a disappointment, much confidence will be gleaned from the performance, especially those of midfielder Brendan Yates and striker Nathan Booth, whose breathtaking work-rate were both rewarded with a goal and an assist for each.

Manager Graham Gladwin made two changes to the side which had beaten Maltby Main in the League Cup seven days earlier, with the return of key defender Chris Taylor to the fold after two months of inactivity through an ankle injury.

And, Malc Brown was brought back into midfield to add more bite into the centre.

The game kicked off fifteen minutes late with the officials being delayed due to an accident and, although Hallam remained outside doing a warm-up and Glapwell retreated to the confines of their dressing room, it was the visitors who seemed the better prepared as they took the lead almost immediately from the kick-off.

A long-ball down the left released Gary Page who fed Booth whose enterprising run into the box ended with a cut-back to Yates whose shot took a deflection past keeper Jonathan Scargill.

The strike was timed at 46 seconds and was the third-week running that Hallam had conceded in the opening minute.

And, Glapwell continued to dominate the first period, but they somehow found themselves behind by the break.

Their lead lasted just five minutes before keeper Neil West spilled Jonathan Froggatt’s shot and Craig Worsfold converted the follow-up.

Then, on 35, Glapwell were flat-footed from a throw-in which saw Lee Morris, unmarked from a Tim Willis flick-on, to convert past the powerless West.

And, although Booth brought the visitors back level on the hour following an incisive run from Yates, a mistake in the Glapwell defence on 88 saw Hallam grab the most unlikely of victories.

A routine ball into the penalty area saw West and his two centre-backs leave the clearance to each other, allowing Leon Wainman to nip in and feed Morris for his seventeenth of the season.

The result was a sickener for Gladwin’s men who had dominated for long periods and had created the better chances.

Yates was, by far, Glapwell’s most dangerous player and found himself twice denied by the legs of Scargill after excellently well-hit volleys from close-range seemed destined for the net.

And, Steve Dillon, had come close on three occasions but either missed the target or found Scargill in equally defiant mood, his best chance coming on 67 minutes when he dived in to make contact with an in-swinging Page free-kick but his effort went wide.

As the game entered the final quarter, Glapwell did tire having to climb the profound slope on a sticky pitch but, although West was called into action to deny Ryan O’Carroll and Jason Swann, there was nothing to suggest Hallam could win the match until the late press of the self-destruct button by Glapwell.
