GLAPWELL had a Steve Dillon brace to thank for rescuing a point from a game they should have won comfortably. Poor defensive errors saw them concede goals at the beginning and end of the first half. Glapwell were under pressure from the kick-off, Matt Faye’s 25-yard drive skimming the crossbar in the first minute. The visitors were still trying to settle when Adam Goldthorpe broke clear, he beat the advancing Neil West to the ball, guided it towards goal, and an unmarked Matt Flynn raced in to make sure from three yards. Good work from John Redfern released Brendan Yates down the right after seven minutes. The midfielder curled a great ball in but, unfortunately, no Glapwell player could get on the end of it. Malc Brown found Simon Poxon in the box three minutes later, the captain’s first touch eluding him and eventually he prodded the ball wide for a goal kick. Brown and Page were driving Glapwell forward, but the final ball wasn’t there and the good deliveries were being mopped up by a determined Liversedge back line. Liversedge continued to threaten on the break. By now though Glapwell had settled and Flynn and Paul Smith were frequently being caught offside. Steve Saunders drove over the bar after 20 minutes from Poxon’s headed clearance. Saunders sent Smith clear a minute later but, with only the keeper to beat, he delayed his shot allowing Martin Rowbottom to steal in and knock the ball out for a corner. Redfern found Dillon in the box on 24 minutes, and the striker fired in a rasping drive from an acute angle. Paddy Kerr managed to block the effort but only succeeded in giving Dillon a second bite, from which he made no mistake from six yards to level the score. Glapwell took the game to the home side, and a Page throw found Yates whose shot was deflected for a corner. Dillon met the corner with a flicked header that was well held by Kerr. At the other end, Danny Welch was on hand to deny Matt Sykes on the half-hour. On 33 minutes, Dillon found Rowbottom who forced Kerr to turn his vicious drive round the post. Rowbottom found Dillon with an excellent cross on 35. He controlled with one touch, turned his marker and drove in a low effort that went agonisingly wide of the far post. Poxon completed two important headed clearances before West had to clear from the feet of Smith on 41 minutes. A minute before the break, Page’s free-kick only half-cleared, the ball dropping to Redfern who brought a superb one-handed save from Kerr. But, for all their pressure, Glapwell were again undone by poor marking. Goldthorpe raced down the right and was allowed to turn and deliver the ball into the box where Sykes got in front of his marker to power a header past West. Goldthorpe nearly increased the home side’s lead three minutes into the restart, ghosting past Page to clip the bar with a 10-yard volley from a long free-kick. Glapwell thought they had equalised on the hour mark when Dillon capitalised on Yates’ deflected effort. The striker drilled his shot into the far corner of the net only to see the linesman’s flag go up. West raced out to clear from the feet of Sykes on 64 minutes. Glapwell forced a series of corners and free kicks to no avail as Liversedge hold firm. Brown took a knock on 75 minutes and was replaced by Adie Carter. Glapwell finally got back on level terms when Redfern fed Dillon on the edge of the box. The striker remained cool, and when Kerr went to his right Dillon slotted the ball down his left for his second. The last fifteen minutes found Glapwell looking for a winner without success. They were left with a share of the points when tighter marking at the back would have secured all three. |
