A RAMPANT display of attacking football by Glapwell gave them their first ‘double’ and biggest win of the season. It also inflicted the heaviest defeat on the visitors Glasshoughton this season. Goals from Steve Dillon (2), Brendan Yates, Lee Rhodes and James Gilling left the visitors shell-shocked and frankly, fortunate not to have conceded more. The home side went at the visitors from the off and it was no surprise when they went in front after seven minutes. Paul Fox gave the ball away to Gary Page who immediately found Dillon, the striker side-stepped one defender before drilling the ball past Danny Gautrey. Glapwell continued to press with both Adie Carter and Page going close in the first 10 minutes. Glasshoughton responded with Jevons pulling a vicious low drive wide of the far post on 15 minutes. And Neil West had to be alert soon after, clearing from the feet of Dave Dickinson. Glapwell’s answer was swift, Danny Welch pounced on a loose ball and fed Dillon who slipped the ball through Gautrey’s legs to make it 2-0. Dickinson thought he had pulled one back for the visitors firing home from the edge of the box off Jamie Heathcote’s long pass. His joy was short-lived, however, as the linesman’s flag went up. Glapwell’s inclusion of Carter was paying dividends as he gave the visitors a torrid time down the right flank. There was no rest for them down the left either, as Page and Martyn Bicknell produced some excellent moves. Glasshoughton’s Jonathon Jones left the field on 32 minutes with an injury to be replaced by Luke Smith. Dillon then superbly controlled West’s long kick and fed Page down the right. His curling cross was met on the volley by Yates who seemed certain to score, only to see Gawtrey turn the ball around the post with an astonishing reflex save. Bicknell’s forceful run on 40 minutes took him into the box, his rasping shot was only parried by the keeper and Yates was on hand to finish from three yards. Whatever was said in the visitors changing room at half time did the trick as they pegged back Glapwell deep in their own half. Jevons went close after 50 minutes from Heathcote’s long free kick. Two bookings followed, Page for Glapwell and Jevons for the visitors, both for late tackles. After having weathered twenty minutes of sustained pressure, Glapwell continued where they had left off. Yates forced a corner with a shot from the edge of the box on 65 minutes. Dickinson then tested West with a 20 yarder at the other end. However, Taylor threw the visitors a lifeline on 74 minutes. His clumsy challenge on Dickinson earned them a penalty. Glasshoughton captain Richard Stack struck the spot kick firmly but West was equal to it, diving low to his right to turn it around the post. Bicknell spoilt an excellent personal performance by indulging in a pushing match with Jevons, which earned him a deserved yellow card. John Purdy did well to deny Jevons with a perfectly timed tackle on 82 minutes before two late goals from youngsters James Gilling and Lee Rhodes completed an impressive performance for Glapwell. |
