GLAPWELL re-signed Robbie Clarke in midweek and the striker played his part in another impressive display at Hall Corner. Glapwell started slowly and it was the visitors who had the majority of the early possession. The home side had to wait until the tenth minute before they produced a shot on goal. This came from Clarke who collected Adie Carter’s cross in the box before firing tamely at Mick Johnson from 12 yards. Chris Martin should have scored for the Buxton when he met Paul Ashwell’s curling corner on 13 minutes, but his headed attempt was well held by Neil West. Glapwell scored against the run of play on 16 minutes, Clarke won a free kick on the right hand side of the box. Brown delivered to the far post where Clarke rose to head across goal to the waiting Chris Taylor who made no mistake from four yards. Taylor was in action two minutes later, this time at the other end cutting out Gary Poole’s dangerous low cross. Poole hit a 30 yard free kick on 20 minutes, but again West’s handling was immaculate. On 21 minutes, Steve Dillon was felled from behind by Les McMahon earning the midfielder the first booking of the game. Dillon picked himself up and drove the free kick around the wall forcing a fine one-handed save out of Johnson. Martin Rowbotham found Carter on 27 minutes with a 30-yard defense splitting ball. Carter’s first time cross was seemingly met by Dillon, but in fact it was Buxton Captain Jonty Wood who got the touch that steered the ball into his own net to make the score 2-0. Dillon tried again to get on the score sheet after 35 minutes latching on to a Danny Welch through ball before firing wide from the edge of the box. A minute later, indecision from Simon Poxon had West racing out of his box to clear from the feet of Poole. Glapwell made it three on 42 minutes, capitalizing on almost comedic defending from Buxton, with Carter the scorer, chipping over the bodies of keeper Johnson and defender Martin after both had made a mess of their clearances. The final few minutes saw West the busier of the two keepers, pulling off saves from Poole and Andy Tibenham. Pickford could have got the visitors back into the game on 49 minutes but his weak effort was easily collected by West. Lewis hit his own bar with an attempted clearance on 52 minutes before the ball was scrambled away. Glapwell had started the second half as they had the first, very slowly, allowing the visitors more of the ball. They finally came to life on 62 minutes when Dillon found Clarke who thought he had scored after curling his shot around Johnson only to see his effort hit the post. Two minutes later, McMahon received his marching orders for a second bookable offence, a decision that seemed a little harsh considering the conditions. Carter again did well down the right on 69 minutes, finding Dillon with his cross. The striker’s effort was superbly saved by Johnson, the follow-up by Redfern was put over the bar. Buxton were thrown a lifeline after 74 minutes when Andy Ketterick capitalized on the home sides failure to clear their lines by drilling the ball past West from 12 yards. The hope was only that as both James Gilling and Lee Rhodes went close, bringing good stops out of Johnson. Glapwell completed the scoring two minutes from the end when Gilling scored from close range after Dillon’s effort from Carter’s cross had been cleared off the line. Another good all round performance from Graham Gladwin’s men that sees them climb to tenth in the league. |
