GLAPWELL’S run of good form ended in spectacular fashion as bottom club Eccleshill put five goals past the Derbyshire side.

Goals from Steve Dillon, Robbie Clarke and Brendan Yates were not enough as the visitors often ripped the fragile Glapwell defence apart.

Glapwell had the first chance on goal; in the very first minute Malc Brown forced Stuart Wilkinson into a fine save when he shot from just inside the box.

The optimism was short lived for the home side, two minutes later the visitors went in front. Karl Cochrane found space down the right, something he managed to do all game, his low driven cross wrong-footed Gary Page and Simon Poxon, and James Russell drilled the ball past Neil West from six yards.

Paul Newsome tested West with a 20-yard drive, then, a minute later found Stuart Waite free on the right, the full-back cut inside and, with Cochrane waiting for the square pass, he decided to go it alone forcing a corner out of West.

Glapwell got back on level terms on 16 minutes, Poxon found Chris Taylor with his deep cross and he headed down to Dillon who volleyed home from 5 yards.

The visitors found themselves in front on 23 minutes, Cochrane chasing a through ball saw West get there first.

Unfortunately, last week’s hero turned villain as he sliced his clearance into the path of Cochrane who slid the ball into the empty net from 15 yards.

Eccleshill made it three on 38 minutes when another attempted clearance from West found Newsome and again the ball was guided into the empty net, this time from 20 yards.

Just a minute later, Glapwell were thrown a lifeline. The home side’s man of the match John Redfern made a forceful run into the box, he went down under the challenge of Richard Wilson and the linesman immediately flagged for a penalty which seemed a harsh decision.

Yates struck the penalty, which Wilkinson parried well, only to see Yates follow up and finish from five yards at the second attempt.

West had to be at his best on the stroke of half time, saving at full stretch from Russell.

Glapwell started the second half with more urgency and went looking for an equalizer. This duly came after 50 minutes, courtesy of Clarke who stabbed the ball home from 5 yards in a goalmouth melee.

Both teams were doing their best to entertain the crowd with a display of end-to-end football.

However, the gaps were starting to appear again at the back for Glapwell. Russell and Sharp both tested West with long-range efforts and Page made a superb tackle to deny Cochrane a shot on goal.

West though, was beaten on 68 minutes, Cochrane found space in the box and skipped around the home keeper to finish from 10 yards.

Three minutes later, Glapwell’s misery was complete, Russell the player to find space before firing past West with a slight deflection.

Glapwell had chances after that, Wilkinson turning Brown’s effort around the post and Wilson clearing Dillon’s goalbound shot after the striker had gone round the visiting keeper.

West had one last save to make, spreading himself well to collect Newsom’s low drive just before the final whistle.

On the whole a very disappointing day for Glapwell, although Eccleshill fully deserved the victory and were the better side on the day.
