Referee: David Benton (Sheffield)

A SOLITARY strike from Robbie Clarke seven minutes from time was all there was to separate the two teams at Hall Corner on Saturday.

The game, though, will probably be remembered for the three sendings off a couple of minutes before the final whistle. A rash challenge and then punches thrown saw Martyn Bicknell, Simon Golightly and Craig Roden take an early bath.

In a dour and uninspiring game, there was one piece of good news, the successful return of crowd favourite Freddie Morgan. Coming on as a late second half substitute, Morgan had an immediate impact on the game when he provided the knockdown for Clarke’s goal.

Glapwell started the game looking sharper than in recent matches and had Armthorpe pinned back in the opening five minutes.

A clash of heads between Martin Rowbottom and Kevin Riley on six minutes saw the game stopped while both received treatment.

This awakened the visitors and captain David Jones fired wide from twenty yards after nine minutes. Then Chris Clegg put his edge of the box effort over the bar.

The tactical battle of the day was going to be whether Armthorpe would be able to spring the offside trap that a more efficient looking Glapwell back four, superbly marshaled by captain Simon Poxon, had adopted.

Steve Dillon was off target on 22 minutes as his 22-yard drive whistled past the post.

Chris Taylor upended Simon Johnson two yards outside the box a minute later to give the visitors a free kick in a very dangerous position.

This was emphasised when with a curling shot Jones rattled the post with Neil West beaten.

Pete Yates in the Armthorpe goal did well to hold a vicious drive from Dillon on 28 minutes and minutes later turned Clarke’s effort around the post after good work from Adie Carter and Dillon.

On the half hour mark Brendan Yates should have put the home side ahead his low driven shot going the wrong side of the far post with Yates floundering.

Johnson beat the offside trap on 34 minutes to collect Clegg’s great through ball; unfortunately, with just West to beat, he scuffed his shot to leave the keeper an easy pickup.

Clarke in fact had the ball in the net after 36 minutes, shooting through Yates legs only to see the Assistant Referee’s flag go up for offside.

Simon Golightly went close for the visitors before Yates did well to recover after failing to hold a Danny Welch low drive. The keeper bravely dived at the feet of two oncoming Glapwell players just before the break.

Jones tested West early in the second half and Dillon did the same at the other end with an acrobatic volley which Yates held superbly.

Both teams flattered to deceive and the game looked to be heading towards stalemate.

Bicknell then produced his last useful contribution of the game on 83 minutes when his cross found the head of Morgan. His directed header found Clarke who quickly turned and fired the low 15 yard winner past Yates.

It was then that the game took a turn for the worse; firstly, Jones was booked for comments to the Referee. Minutes later, a challenge and confrontation between Bicknell and Golightly, who had both been booked for an earlier set to, descended into a ruck.

Punches were thrown and after consulting both linesmen, referee David Benton brandished straight reds to Bicknell, Golightly and Armthorpe’s Roden who had joined in the turmoil.
