FINALLY, the demons of despair from two seasons ago were eliminated at Hall Corner last Tuesday.

First Division Glapwell had been one of the Cup storymakers in the 1999/2000 season as they progressed to the semi-final of the Presidents Cup and the final of the League Cup, defeating half-a-dozen Premier Division sides along the way.

In the showcase final at the Dimple Wells Ground, however, they produced a poor performance as they were defeated 3-1 by Garforth Town.

But, here was a chance to gain a little bit of revenge, with the Yorkshire side having lost their previous six matches coming into this Third Round encounter.

And, although it was only the slenderest of victories, thanks to a Chris Taylor strike just before half-time, the joy that was felt at Hall Corner at keeping their hopes of silverware alive was clearly overwhelming.

Furthermore, it was another clean sheet, the side’s fifth shutout in seven games - the best defensive run seen by the Glapwell side in recent seasons.

Manager Graham Gladwin made only one change to the side which had defeated Armthorpe Welfare on the previous weekend.

Gary Page’s availability means that he came in at left-back whilst Martyn Bicknell, disgraced in a sending-off in the Welfare game, was relegated to the bench.

And, Gladwin rotated players around, putting Brendan Yates on the left-wing replacing Danny Welch who moved into the centre of midfield and Robbie Clarke was pushed back up-front.

Yet, Glapwell’s first-half performance was not inspiring as Town missed several chances to go ahead.

Their best opportunity came on 24 minutes when a swift counter-attacking move between Karl Ward and Jamie Gibbs allowed Paul Arkle to get forward.

However, his shot was well saved by Neil West.

And, they were punished when Glapwell took the lead on 43 minutes.

Taylor was the last man to touch the ball, following an excellent Glapwell free kick by Page.

The match was turning into an exciting cup tie, with very little to show between the two sides.

Glapwell, however, had the greater opportunities and had three chances blocked and cleared off the line in quick succession on 70 minutes.

Firstly, Simon Collins blocked a shot by diving in front of Robbie Clarke.

Then the resulting corner was again cleared off the line by Collins for another corner.

The next corner was played in from the other corner flag and was again cleared, but this time by the head of Andy Sharp.

Garforth had ridden their luck through these vital minutes, but Glapwell were also looking nervy at the back.

And, with five minutes remaining, Garforth had their best opportunity to get an equaliser and send the match into extra-time.

Excellent build-up play from John Francis resulted in an inch perfect cross into the path of Collins.

But, his shot from six yards went just wide, even though it looked easier to score.
