GLAPWELL’S last chance of silverware this season fell out of their grasp without a struggle as they went out of the League Cup with a whimper. In their last encounter with Hallam, at Sandygate at the end of November, the Hall Corner side were disappointed to have left Yorkshire with a 3-2 defeat despite dominating the entire afternoon. However, this time, Graham Gladwin’s side can have no complaints. They were beaten in every aspect of the match as their visitors cantered through to the final four of the competition. Gladwin had problems going into the encounter with John Redfern and Chris Taylor unavailable whilst the long-term loss of Nathan Booth and Malc Brown meant that the manager was down to the bare bones of his squad. In fact, he even had to call on the services of an unfit Robbie Clarke, currently struggling with a groin injury, and old favourite Stuart Wall who had not appeared in a Glapwell side since the beginning of the season. But, the biggest concern was in the centre of midfield where the relative inexperience and lack of years of Danny Welch and Lee Rhodes meant, although both worked incredibly hard, the powerful Mark Calvin and Tim Willis had almost pure supremacy for Hallam. And yet, the game had begun with a positive air as the hosts bossed the opening ten minutes and took the lead through Steve Dillon’s seventeenth of the season. He pounced on a poor back pass from Craig Pinder, before rounding keeper Jonathan Scargill and calmly slotting the ball past two Hallam defenders who had retreated to the goal line. But, after Tim Willis hit the bar in the tenth minute, the game swung completely in Hallam’s direction. Glapwell managed to keep their lead intact when Neil West produced a miracle save to deny Craig Worsfold following Simon Poxon’s weak header back. However, on 12, Hallam drew level when Worsfold pounced on some home defensive dalliance and struck the ball past West. His attacking partner, Jonathan Froggatt, then brought a dramatic save out of West when his unchallenged half-volley from a long throw-in seemed destined for the back of the net. Hallam’s territorial advantage finally told on the half-hour mark. In an excellent sweeping move down the left-hand side, Russ Flaherty fed Froggatt down the wing and, as the striker got to the byline, his pull-back found Worsfold at the near post who converted past West. Glapwell had their keeper to thank once again on 36 when Worsfold found himself through on goal yet again but he was denied his hat-trick. Any hopes of a second-half revival were finally dashed eleven minutes after the restart when Hallam claimed their vital third goal. A ball over the top of the Glapwell back-line released Worsfold down the right, a pin-point cross to the far post was turned home by Froggatt. After that, the game petered out into a no-contest as Glapwell struggled to maintain any momentum and Hallam seemed content on their lead. In fact, Scargill was only called into action once in the second period, and that was an easy pick-up from a long-range Gary Page free-kick. |
