FINISHING was the difference between the sides at Mill Lane on Saturday as Pickering Town defeated Glapwell by two goals. A very much under-strength Glapwell welcomed back old favourite Dave Cunnington to the team. And the classy defender produced a performance that made him look as if he had been playing all season instead of it being his first appearance of the campaign. Glapwell, for all their hard work, could not find the net, but title-chasing Pickering Town, with a goal in each half, showed the visitors how it was done. Glapwell went behind after just nine minutes of play. Martyn Bicknell attempted to head the ball back to Neil West. Unfortunately he put too much into the header and West was forced to turn the ball onto the post. The rebound fell kindly to Matthew
Morton who Glapwell responded and, a minute later, John Redfern blazed an edge of the box effort over the bar after good work down the left from Lee Rhodes. West was in action on twenty minutes, turning an Adam Wash eighteen-yard drive around the post. More good work from Rhodes on 27 minutes down the left led to his cross finding Freddie Morgan. But, his first time effort from twelve yards was well held by Pikes goalkeeper, Kevin Martin. Brendan Yates then went close, turning his marker before firing wide from the edge of the box. Danny Farthing was similarly close on the half hour mark. And, a minute later, Cunnington put in a timely tackle to deny Wash an excellent shooting opportunity. West was busy again on 35 minutes, first palming Morton's effort around the post, then saving a Peter Vasey header from the resulting corner kick. Morgan should have brought the visitors level on 52 minutes but Martin held his twenty-yard drive. Yates was just off target again on the hour mark before Pickering extended their lead two minutes later. Bicknell was dispossessed by Phil O’Reilly who fed Dean McAuley. The home striker raced into the box before firing an unstoppable drive past West. Glapwell continued to take the game to the home side but the final ball always let them down. Yates should have pulled one back for Glapwell on 76 minutes, turning his marker before firing past Martin. But, he could only put his effort past the far post. Chris Taylor then had a header cleared off the line by Willoughby ten minutes from time. But, this was to be their last serious effort on goal as the hosts claimed the three points. Glapwell will be hoping to exact revenge on Saturday when they entertain Pickering at Hall Corner. |
