GLAPWELL notched up their tenth home win with an ultimately comfortable victory over basement side, Garforth Town. The Hall Corner side have now got the third best home record of any in the Premier Division, and must now look at their bafflingly appalling away form - the worst of the division - to see why they are not higher up the table. Manager Graham Gladwin came into the fixture with further selection problems, but was boosted by the return of Jason Bowater from his various jaunts in Bosnia and Afghanistan. The game began with Bowater playing in an unfamiliar right-midfield role with Adie Carter pushed over to the left. And, for the opening twenty minutes, it looked as the side were not able to get to grips with the change as Garforth Town ran amok, with the hosts relying on good work by Neil West and a certain amount of luck to remain on level terms. Jay Sobers, Mick Morton and Jamie Little all found themselves denied by the Glapwell keeper whilst Sam Polli, having found himself through on goal, beat West but saw his shot smack off the top of the crossbar. Then, came the defining moment of the evening when Gladwin changed personnel, bringing Lee Rhodes on for John Purdy, putting Bowater and Carter back into their more comfortable positions of centre-back and right-winger, respectively. And, from thereon, Glapwell fully dominated proceedings without ever really clicking into gear. The big worry for Garforth Town fans must be that they succumbed so easily to defeat, and are now all too aware that the trapdoor below their feet could very soon swing open. For Glapwell’s dominance following the substitution, they only created one close opportunity in the opening period. That came on 33 minutes, when Carter, who was turning Garforth left-back Phil Hutchinson inside-out, produced a cross that Rhodes could only head wide at the far post. But, soon after the half-time interval, Glapwell grabbed the goal which ensured the game went their way. There was good fighting work in the box by Carter to keep the ball amongst a sea of defender and, as Danny Gautrey came out of his net, the winger squared the ball for John Redfern to convert into the empty net. Chances though were few-and-far between from either side, a Polli diving header from a Hutchinson free-kick brought West into action whilst Chris Taylor had a turn-and-shot over from the edge of the box for the home side. The home side were still dominant but were all too aware of the fragility of the one-goal lead, and that was made even more of a worry when West received a painful knock to his right ankle having come out of his goal to stop Polli in his tracks. This meant that for the last thirty minutes, Glapwell’s goal was looked after by the limping West but Garforth never put him under any severe pressure to take advantage. And, with six minutes remaining, Glapwell soothed their nerves as Carter turned home a Brendan Yates cross from the right at close range. West was called upon to make a point-blank save as he tipped over a Richard Allison header from six yards. But, Glapwell had the last say in injury time when a sweeping move ended with Yates crossing once again from the right, this time for Redfern to slide in for his second. |
