GLAPWELL made the long trip to Bradford on Easter Monday with six first team regulars missing and lost 3-1 at Eccleshill United. The side was so depleted that even manager Graham Gladwin made the starting line-up. This did not deter Glapwell, however, from taking the lead after 15 minutes. A far post corner from Gladwin was met by Chris Taylor who headed back across the goal. John Purdy rose to knock the ball down to the waiting Lee Rhodes who stroked home confidently from six yards to get his second goal for the club. Glapwell were showing no signs of being a weakened side and took the game to Eccleshill. Indeed, they were putting the home side on the back foot for most of the half. And, if a Stuart Waite trip on Steve Dillon had got the penalty decision it deserved, then Glapwell would have been in a comfortable position. But, such as football is, Eccleshill got back on level terms on the stroke of half-time. Karl Cochrane won possession on the right-hand flank. He then raced into the box before squaring the ball for Paul Newsome to sidefoot into the net against the run of play. And, it got worse for the visitors when Glapwell were left shell-shocked two minutes into the restart. A cross from the right was met by Newsome, who flicked the ball past the advancing Darren Lomas to make it 2-1. Glapwell’s misery was then completed on 56 minutes. Cochrane raced clear and, as he rounded Lomas, the keeper made contact with the striker. The referee immediately pointed to the spot to the despair of the visiting support. Lomas received a red card for the challenge and Gladwin was forced to take the jersey, the fourth time an outfield player had been in the Glapwell net this season. He could do nothing about Mark Senior’s spot-kick and Glapwell, reduced to ten men, were now 3-1 down. Glapwell did well not to concede for the rest of the half but, ultimately, could not find a way back into the game. |
