GLAPWELL’s trip to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield F.C., ended badly as Steve Dillon had a last minute penalty saved to deny the visitors a share of the points. Two goals in the first ten minutes were enough to seal Glapwell’s fate in a very uninspiring 90 minutes. What little action there was came in the first and last 10 minutes of the game. Sheffield attacked from the off and Glapwell found themselves reeling from the home side’s quick start. Inevitably, the visitors went behind on nine minutes, the ball fell to Darrell Fox inside the box after Glapwell had failed to clear their lines and he rifled it past Neil West to open the scoring. A minute later Sheffield went two up. Sloppy defending again allowed Lee Machin to run clear before sliding the ball past West. John Redfern should have pulled one back for Glapwell, but his edge of the box effort was superbly turned round the post by Darren Bonnington after 20 minutes. Glapwell’s woeful defending continued for the rest of the half, although a mediocre Sheffield side could not capitalize on the chances offered up to them. The second half saw a different Glapwell side; defensively they tightened up and competed much better all over the park. This contributed to a very dour second period with neither side offering up much in the way of entertainment. The crowd had to wait until the 83rd minute to see another goal. Glapwell were finishing the stronger of the two sides and pulled a goal back through centre-half Chris Taylor. This was in the form of a 25-yard screamer that left Bonnington with no chance. The goal gave Sheffield the jitters and Glapwell pushed on in search of the equalizer. Just when they thought they had left it too late substitute Lee Rhodes was bundled over in the box and a penalty was awarded. Steve Dillon struck the ball to Bonnington’s left only to see the keeper palm the ball away at full stretch. As the ball was cleared by a defender, the referee’s whistle went to signal the end of the game. On this showing, Glapwell fully deserved to come away with nothing, although the home side was hardly a beacon of football excellence. |
