GLAPWELL’S season is beginning to deteriorate game by game. The club has been hit by an injury and suspension epidemic that left them with just twelve available and fit players for last Saturday’s game. To their credit, the players available never stopped battling, but they were always struggling against a skilful and organised Hallam side. Glapwell went behind on ten minutes when failure to clear their lines saw the ball drop invitingly to Jonathan Froggatt on the edge of the box, for him to rifle past the diving Neil Etheridge. Hallam continued to press the home side and the central defensive pairing of Chris Taylor and Stuart Wall were working overtime to stem the tide. They were helped in their endeavours by the continuous stop-start refereeing from local official David Plowright. Glapwell could not muster a decent effort on goal in the first half-hour, and they went further behind on 32 minutes. A delightful little through-ball from Craig Worsfold was met on the half-volley by Paul Wood who gave Etheridge no chance from fifteen yards. Glapwell did create a chance two minutes later. Brendan Yates sent Steve Dillon clear, but Hallam keeper Jonathan Scargill was on his toes to clear from the feet of the Glapwell striker. Ben Clark was booked on 42 minutes for an innocuous challenge on Hallam captain Tim Willis. And, two minutes later, Hallam’s Lee Morris followed for dissent. Glapwell started the second-half brightly, forcing two early corners and pressing the visitors back into their own half. This new found optimism was short-lived, however, on 51 minutes. while the Glapwell defenders were still appealing for an offside decision, Morris took a quick throw-in which found Ryan O’Carroll unmarked in the Glapwell box. With the entire goal to choose from, he drove his effort past the stranded Etheridge to make it 3-0. Glapwell were now being restricted to playing the long ball with the visitors’ midfield of Mark Calvin, Willis and Morris controlling the game. Etheridge made one final save, getting down well to hold a 30-yard effort from Willis. |
