ALTHOUGH languishing in the bottom half of the table Glapwell still had a big say in the destination of the league title. This was emphasised on Saturday as they fought back with two late goals to seriously dent Brigg Town's championship aspirations. Glapwell started the game looking more determined and organised than in recent matches and they needed to be as Brigg surged forward. John Redfern cleared a Lee Borman effort off the line after only 4 minutes and Borman was in action minutes later as Neil West saved at his feet. Brigg continued to press and Craig Stones headed over the bar after 27 minutes before another goal-line clearance, this time Chris Parr denying Stones. West superbly saved a Rob Nevis downward header from a Luke Cadman corner just before the break. Glapwell had worked really hard to stem the Brigg onslaught but all that work was undone 2 minutes into the second half. Glapwell failed to clear from a deep free kick and Simon Drayton was on hand to fire past West from 6 yards. A minute later all seemed lost as the home side went further behind. Borman raced clear before firing past West from just inside the box. Drayton fired straight at West on 52 minutes as Brigg continued to press. West was in superb form when he turned a Simon Roach drive over the bar on the hour. Glapwell should have pulled one back 2 minutes later when after Jordan had saved at the feet of Brendan Yates, Robbie Clarke saw his goalbound effort hooked away by Rowland for a corner. Another excellent one handed save from West, denying Borman's rasping drive. Not to be outdone, Steve Jordan at the other ended tipped a curling 25 yard free kick from Freddie Morgan over the bar. The Glapwell comeback started when the ball was fired into a crowd of players in the Brigg penalty box. Shouts went up for a penalty and at first the referee seemed to wave away the appeals. But, with his linesman flagging and then signalling for a penalty he eventually gave the decision. Morgan stepped up and clinically dispatched the spot kick. For most of the game Brigg had looked supremely confident but the nerves were starting to fray in the final minutes. Ben Clark was fouled on the righthand side with 3 minutes to go. Redfern delivered a pinpoint cross and Yates rose to head the ball against the bar. Unfortunately for Brigg the ball dropped and hit keeper Jordan on the back and crossing the line before being hooked clear. The linesman immediately signalled the goal and Glapwell's comeback was complete. |
